Executive Summary of
NJ’s Recruiting Summit, 10/26/01

  1. Attract and retain quality library professionals by providing comparable salaries in relation to other information/education professionals.

  2. Use and create opportunities to share our personal excitement about being a librarian, in order to recruit talented new librarians to the profession.

  3. Promote awareness of librarianship as a career by: cross-training all employees for customer service; developing career ladders; educating school counselors; college career counseling.

  4. Get a library associate title in NJ Dept. of Personnel titles.

  5. Hire diverse groups of students to work in all kinds of libraries as pages, student assistants, etc.

  6. Hire a recruiter to implement the plan and assess results.

  7. Prepare position paper on MLS competencies for library schools.

  8. Initiate ad campaign — this is what the profession is.

Selected Short Term Goals:

  1. Using NJLA’s Pay Equity Study and salary tool kit, conduct negotiating workshops.

  2. Create (NJSL?) a task force to clean up NJDOP titles.

  3. Establish library trainee positions when possible.

  4. Mentor interested people who sign up at Open Houses.

  5. Work with Thomas Edison College on four-year program for library associate.

  6. Design and produce a tiny tri-fold to give to prospective librarians.

  7. Target ethnic media in media campaigns.

  8. Train library staff to be recruiters.

Selected First Steps:

  1. Participate and promote NJLA’s Pay Equity Study.

  2. Create a one-minute statement on why you love being a librarian (to have ready when people ask you why you love what you do!)

  3. Find out how many people are on each NJDOP step.

  4. Send school and college counselors the recruiting brochures.

  5. Be aware of and use your personal power: wear your "Ask Me Why I Love What I Do" pin.

  6. Host an Open House.

  7. Create a salary tool kit.
