Dear Emily,

Enclosed is some information about job shadowing. Your job shadowing mentor will be Mary Librarian from the Manchester Branch. She will be contacting you to arrange a time convenient to you both for visiting her at the Branch and observing her work.

Fact Sheet for Shadowers

Job Shadowing: Participants Information Fact Sheet

What is Job Shadowing?

Job shadowing is an opportunity to give individuals first-hand knowledge and experience in exploring the world-of-work. An applicant with a career interest in librarianship is matched with, observes, and interacts with a librarian in that career in the workplace. Participants have an opportunity to learn about the education, skill requirements, and characteristics of the job.

General Job Shadowing Guidelines

Preparation

  • Job Shadowing is part of an educational process. Participants are not paid for this experience.
  • To make this experience meaningful, some preparation is helpful. Be familiar with these guidelines. Ask informed and relevant questions. Information about librarianship can be located at http://www.becomealibrarian.org. Other resources can be obtained through your library.

Attire

Please dress appropriately for the workplace you will be visiting.
Appropriate dress for a library means trousers, casual slacks (not jeans) and a shirt with or without a tie for men. Women could wear conservative skirts, slacks, blouses or sweaters.  Neither sex should wear jeans, running shoes, hats or shorts.

The Day "On-the-Job"

  1. Start the job shadowing experience by introducing yourself to your shadow volunteer.
  2. You are expected to follow the rules and policies of the library. You must comply with our worksite safety rules.
  3. Come prepared with plenty of questions (and a pencil!). The person you're observing is a volunteer, and loves to talk about her/his job. Your enthusiasm will be catching.
  4. Complete the Evaluation Form and return it to your Job Shadowing Coordinator after the experience.

 Follow-up

  1. Turn in your evaluation form to your Job Shadowing Coordinator.
  2. A thank you note to your shadowing volunteer is always appreciated.
